Tourney success
To the editor:
The In-Fisherman Super Pro-Am Professional Walleye Tournament held recently at the Chassell Centennial Park could not have been possible without the help of all of the volunteers and the financial support of our sponsors who made this possible.
The people of Chassell should be proud of the facility they have. The folks from the PWT marveled at the improvements since they had last been here.
The Chassell VFW put on a fabulous dinner Tuesday night for the pros and amateurs and was made possible by meal sponsor Selkey Manufacturing of Baraga and Keweenaw Brewing Co. of Houghton.
An event such as this brings great national exposure to our area as well as pumping money into our economy. In talking to the pros and amateurs I would conservatively estimate that $200,000 was brought into the local economy.
Using a multiplier of 1.5 the overall economic impact was around $300,000.
The In-Fisherman PWT staff was impressed again with the area, its fishery, and the hospitality of the people and has already told me that they look forward to returning in a few years with another event.
The local media (including) The Daily Mining Gazette, radio and TV also did a great job of covering the event. A special thank you goes to Houghton Chief Ralph Raffaelli who put together a tour of the area for the PWT staff and pro’s spouses and to the attractions that accommodated them.
Again this event would not be possible without the great volunteers and the financial and in-kind support of our sponsors: Chassell Township, Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau, Martineau & Morris Contracting Inc., Portage Health, Best Western Franklin Square Inn, UPPCO, Selkey’s Manufacturing, Inc., Baraga Telephone Co., Country Inn & Suites, Best Western, Copper Crown Motel, Houghton Super 8, Budget Host Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Copper Country Ford’s Lincoln and Mercury, Inc., Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Natural Resources Department, Superior Dock & Lift, The Waterfront Restaurant, Joey’s Seafood & Grill, The Ambassador, Armando’s Italian American Restaurant & Douglass House Saloon, Pizza Hut, 41- Lumber, Superior National Bank, Quincy’s Restaurant, Pilgrim River Steak House, McDonald’s Restaurant, Sheldon’s Pasties & Bakery, Subway, Heartland Communication, Michigan Technological University, Keweenaw Brewing Co., the City of Houghton and The Print Shop.
