CALUMET — Officials with the Keweenaw National Historical Park are continuing to repair and upgrade buildings and other structures within the park and at its various Heritage Sites.
John Rosemurgy, KNHP historical architect, said park service employees are in the process of repairing the former worker houses on U.S. Highway 41 across from the Quincy Mine Hoist.
Rosemurgy said workers have replaced the roof on one house and are in the process of replacing the roof on another house.
Workers are also repairing the Quincy Mine office building, Rosemurgy said. The bricks on a chimney are being repainted with mortar, but the replacing of the roof will have to be put off until next spring.
The deadline for applying to be a KNHP Heritage Site is Aug. 5, and Rosemurgy said 11 applications have been received so far, with five of those coming from new sites.
Abby Sue Fisher, KNHP chief of museum, archives and historical services, said a fire-suppression system was recently installed in the park headquarters building in Calumet.
“It’s been a little disruptive in our building,” she said.
