LAURIUM — The Laurium Village Council took action Tuesday which will make the recently-purchased truck for the Laurium Fire Department finally look like it belongs to the village.
Public Safety Committee member Mark Bonenfant said the 1983 Chevrolet truck is still has the markings of former owner Eagle Lake Fire and Rescue. Since the truck now belongs to Laurium and it’s now used as a fire equipment truck and not a rescue vehicle, the markings need to be changed.
Village Administrator Ed Vertin, who was involved in the search for a company to make the change, said the best deal found was from Gasoline Alley body shop in Laurium for $1,000 and the fire department’s former 1975 equipment van.
“I think it’s a good trade,” Vertin said.
The council voted unanimously to accept the public safety committee recommendation. Members voted unanimously, also, to spend $2,000 to repair the engine in a 1981 Chevrolet dump truck.
Equipment Committee member James Koskiniemi said although the truck is old, with a good engine it will still be useful for the village and will be a good back-up for other vehicles.
On another property issue, council voted to delay until next month’s meeting a decision on what to do with $35,000 in insurance money for the collapsed former Department of Public Works building located near the George Gipp Arena.
Vertin said the council has a few options for the building.
“We’ll either take the insurance (money) and fix the building, tear it down or turn it into some other function,” Vertin said.
One suggestion for the building is to use it for road salt storage, he said.
