Hancock Schools decrease hot breakfast program

HANCOCK — As part of continued cost-cutting at the Hancock Public Schools, the district has downsized its hot breakfast program from five days a week to two days a week.

The other three days, students will be served a more portable bag breakfast, which will likely contain cold cereal, milk and fruit, according to Hancock Public Schools Superintendent John Vaara.

The move received approval at the regular meeting of the school board on Aug. 21.

“We made the move to streamline the breakfasts purely on labor costs,” Vaara said. Doing so will reduce the number of employee hours by 12 hours a week, he added.

Several other personnel issues were discussed at the Aug. 21 meeting. The board approved the hiring of Lisa Almquist for 8th grade girls basketball coach, Ramon Sague and Ben Tampas for junior varsity football and Chris Nightingale for assistant varsity.

The board tabled approval of the “Doors” community art project spearheaded by local artist Mary Wright.

“We’re still looking for additional information,” Vaara said. The board’s building committee and Wright continue discussions on the project, which would place approximately 100 doors on the Middle School lawn between March and November, 2007.

The board also accepted a bid of $21,577 from U.P. Janitorial Services for cleaning of the Middle School for the upcoming academic year.

Board meetings were also scheduled for the third Monday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Middle School Board Room 417 on Quincy Street in Hancock.
