Former PT assessor questions supervisor

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP — Portage Township’s former assessor confronted Supervisor Bill Bingham at Monday’s board meeting over a phone call Bingham made to him while he was in the township office.

Dave Peterson had been in the township office for two hours in late June when Bingham called him and asked him what reason he had for being in the office for so long.

“I thought it was unusual for a person to be in an office that long,” Bingham said at Monday’s board meeting.

Peterson said he had been meeting with Treasurer Carol Little at her request to assist her on questions related to assessing.

“She a good treasurer,” he said in an interview Monday night. “When she doesn’t know something, she goes to people to get the correct answer.”

Bingham said he had also been moved to call by Peterson’s use of the township computer. Peterson and Little said he had been looking for a form on a state Web site after she was unable to locate it.

Peterson resigned as assessor after two months in January, saying he was unable to reconcile the duties of his post with his status in a land dispute with the township over access to the Section Line Road. He said the June incident was unrelated to that issue.

Peterson said he held no grudge against the township.

“He (Bingham) just lives up the road, “ Peterson said. “If he had a problem, he could have come down. It just seems funny. Why? People are trying to assist other people in trying to do the right thing.”
