Woman dies after boating accident
HUMBOLDT — A 66-year-old Ishpeming woman was killed late Sunday evening after the 12 foot aluminum boat she and her husband were fishing in overturned on Porterfield Lake in Humboldt Township.
According to a press release from the Michigan State Police, Negaunee Post, Kenneth Eckloff, 70, and Evelyn Eckloff, 66, were fishing on Porterfield Lake when their 12 foot aluminum boat overturned. Both were able to swim approximately 100 yards to shore with the overturned boat.
Police said the husband, Kenneth, returned to their residence to seek help while Evelyn remained at the scene. When Kenneth returned shortly thereafter, he found his wife unresponsive and attempted CPR. It is unclear wether Evelyn was conscious when Kenneth left the scene to get help.
After attempts to revive Evelyn failed, Kenneth returned to their residence a second time and called 911 at approximately 10:28 p.m. When first responders arrived, they were unable to revive Evelyn and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
No further information was available as of this morning.
Alcohol was not believed to be a factor in the accident and no foul play is suspected.
