ISHPEMING — A 25-year-old Ishpeming Township man has been arrested and charged in connection with the murder of a 50-year-old Ishpeming Township resident that occurred last weekend.

The man was arrested Monday and has been charged with second degree murder, according to a press release from the Negaunee post of the Michigan State Police. He is currently lodged in the Marquette County Jail awaiting arraignment.

According to the press release, 50-year-old Thomas Edmund Greggs was found dead at his residence on Cooper Lake Road in Ishpeming Township early Saturday morning.

An autopsy performed at Marquette General Hospital on Sunday determined that Greggs died of blunt force trauma, according to Detective Sgt. David Johnston of the Michigan State Police.

Johnston said he could not release any information regarding the relationship between the two men or any additional details about Greggs’ death.

“I can’t say that yet,” he said. “That will probably come out during the preliminary examination.”

The police initially called the incident an “unattended death.” However, the autopsy determined that Greggs’ death was not due to natural causes and is not believed to have been an accident, Johnston said.

The suspect was charged with second-degree murder because police do not believe the murder was pre-meditated, Johnston said. The charge carries a penalty of up to life in prison.

Johnston said he believed the man would be arraigned this afternoon.
