Jason Berryman was driving a 1992 Suzuki Sidekick sport utility vehicle on County Road 478 near the intersection of County Road CH when the small SUV apparently left the road and struck a tree, according to a news release from the Negaunee post of the Michigan State Police.
The cause of the accident was not being released by the state police this morning, a spokesman said.
Police were called around 2 a.m. to the scene, about a mile south of the Greenwood Reservoir and about eight to 10 miles southwest of Ishpeming.
Berryman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said, while his two passengers were injured.
Westwood High School Principal David Boase confirmed that Berryman was a 2005 graduate of the school and had played on the school’s varsity football and basketball teams.
Ishpeming resident Mark Maki, whose age was unavailable from police, was trapped in the rear seat and had to be extricated by Ishpeming Fire and Rescue. He was transported to Marquette General Hospital and was listed in fair condition this morning, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Front-seat passenger Hannaah Spaulding, 18, of Ishpeming was able to extricate herself and sought her own treatment for minor injuries, according to police.
Police said the accident remains under investigation.
