Keweenaw wildfire spreads
COPPER HARBOR — A wildfire on the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula continued to burn Saturday evening, and has already consumed more than 100 acres.
The fire, located near the remote Keystone Bay area, started several weeks ago, likely due to ORV traffic, according to Robert Ziel, a fire specialist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources office in Harvey.
“Whether it’s from exhaust from a machine itself, or from a driver throwing down a match or cigarette — we didn’t find evidence of a campfire or anything — it appears to be related to ORV traffic,” he said.
On Saturday, firefighters had bulldozers and portable pumps on the site as they attempted to build a mineral soil line around the fire to keep it from spreading further.
Because the fire is in a remote area, no structures are in danger, Ziel said.
Ziel said the fire would likely be contained soon.
