IRON MOUNTAIN — Approximately 60 members of the 46th National Guard Military Police Co. out of Kingsford took care of last minute details as they prepared for departure Sunday. They were scheduled to travel through the Lower Peninsula to Fort Dix, N.J., and eventually to Iraq.

The local troops are expected to spend anywhere from 12 to 20 months on deployment.

In 2001, 50 other members of the 46th National Guard Military Police Co. spent approximately 18 months serving in Iraq. In the last five years, members of the 46th National Guard Military Police Co. have served in Hungary, Egypt, Germany, Washington D.C. and Iraq, and also in Louisiana as part of the relief team following Hurricane Katrina.

While on deployment, groups like the Veterans of Foreign Wars help soldiers keep in touch with their families by providing them with phone cards and access to computers for sending e-mails.

Many of the family members of the deployed soldiers are actively involved in the 46th National Guard Military Police Company’s Family Readiness Group. The group is a support system for those going though the emotions of having a loved one overseas. Anyone with a loved one serving overseas is welcome to join.
