Body found in Lake Superior

MARQUETTE — A body pulled out of Lake Superior this morning may be the remains of a man who was swept off of Presque Isle during a heavy storm earlier this summer.
“I could say that’s a possibility,” said Det. Capt. Mike Angeli of the Marquette Police Department. “We really don’t know right now.”
The body was observed by sailors on the Charles M. Beeghly ore carrier as it entered Marquette’s Upper Harbor at about 6 a.m. today, Angeli said. The body was retrieved by the U.S. Coast Guard north of the harbor, about one-quarter to one-half mile off shore, he said.
The body is currently undergoing an autopsy at Marquette General Hospital, Angeli said.
“We’re in the process of identifying it,” he said.
On May 11, Christopher “Kit” Donald Crockett, 35, was walking along the black rocks area on the north end of Presque Isle Park during a storm when he and another man, Luke Allan Whitson, 23, of Marquette, were swept into the lake.
Whitson made it back to shore with the assistance of several bystanders, while Crockett could not.
The U.S. Coast Guard reported waves of 10 to 12 feet in the area during the storm, with winds of 30 to 35 knots blowing from the north and the northeast.
Searchers along the shore, boats and divers from a number of agencies spent four days searching for Crockett’s body. In addition to the Coast Guard and the Marquette police, search personnel and equipment came from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, with support provided by the Marquette Fire Department and Salvation Army.
