Behrend to open Alger concert series

MUNISING — The Alger Parks and Recreation Department will open its summer Concert in the Park series Tuesday with a performance by Great Lakes balladeer Carl Behrend.

Behrend, a Munising folk singer, songwriter and author, will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. at Munising’s Bayshore Park, located in downtown Munising, next to the city dock.

“Carl brings to life true stories and legends from a wealth of Great Lakes history,” an Alger Parks and Recreation Department press release said. “His ballads tell the tales of ships and sailors lost, true loves found and the great lighthouse beacons that guard the rocky coast.”

Behrend, who was born in Escanaba, has produced four CDs and has written two books. He has performed throughout the Great Lakes states.

He said he hopes his upcoming Munising performance with his Great Lakes Legends Band will be fun, entertaining and educational for listeners.

“It gives people something different to do,” Behrend said. “There is really something for everyone.”

The event is funded and supported by the Alger Parks and Recreation Department, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development and several local businesses.

This summer’s free park concert series will include seven performances by a range of artists with varied musical styles.
