MARQUETTE — The Marquette Area Public Schools administration and the union representing MAPS teachers released some details of their tentative contract this morning.

The agreement between MAPS and the Marquette Area Education Association would cover the 2006-2007 school year. A ratification vote by the union is scheduled for Aug. 21. The MAPS Board of Education will consider ratification during its regular meeting Aug. 22.

According to a press release, the contract includes a 2 percent base salary increase and modified salary index for teachers.

On the health care front, the contract will change teachers’ coverage from the current MESSA Super Care I fully insured plan to a MESSA Choices II PPO benefits plan. A current prescription drug plan with a $5 generic /$10 brand name co-pay will change to a $10 generic/$20 brand name plan.

Other major points of the tentative agreement include:

≤The option of a six-period or seven-period day at Marquette Senior High School.

≤Elementary and secondary class size and caseload goals.

According to the release, further details of the agreement will remain confidential until both parties have ratified a new contract.
